Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Since 2002.
What is your primary product or service?
Teaching people to understand and train their dogs, and rear their puppies in the most beneficial way.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
I was studying psychology for a second undergraduate degree when I developed a keen interest at that time in the psychology of animal behavior, particularly dogs.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
I am an excellent and patient communicator. My customers love my gentle, yet highly effective, demeanor with them, their families, and their dogs which are also part of the family. I get results using positive, gentle methods. I always earn the trust of the dog and have never needed to rely on methods which instill fear in order to get results. You will not find me throwing chains or cans filled with coins at your dog. To my mind, some trainers have no business using these archaic methods and charging people who don't know any better for them. I am responsible and responsive. I DO expect customers to practice with their dogs and "do the work" involved in training the dog the methods I teach. NO trainer possesses a Magic Wand which will train and teach your dog without the customer's involvment. I have a state-issued teaching certification from the state of New Jersey, which very few dog trainers have, which allows me to call myself a "professional" in the true sense of the word. Currently, dog training is NOT a profession and most dog trainers are NOT professionals if all they hold is a CPDT or other certification, and there are many out there. I have studied psychology and animal science and am very educated in my field.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
I travel to my customers, which is a service my clientele love. I cover Middlesex, Mercer, Bergen, Somerset, Union and parts of Morris County, New Jersey. I also cover much of New York City, Riverdale in the Bronx, and Staten Island. For a few months in the winter and in to the spring, I service Palm Beach County, Florida; and, North Broward County, Florida.
